Work. Travailler. Trabajo. It can be the thing that gives your life meaning, or the reason you dread getting out of bed in the morning. It is the engine that drives human society, whether urban or rural, capitalist or communist, first or third world. How people approach work and its attendant issues says as much about them as any other measurement. Who works and what sort of work do they do? What sort of work yields the greatest compensation? How are the fruits of such labor distributed within the greater society? Does one work for money or is work part of how we establish a sense of purpose?As the U.S. muddles its way through (or deeper into) the current economic recession, the numbers everyone is watching are in the unemployment line. So, if nothing else, the arrival of the COOL'EH Work Issue is mighty timely.

They say that the crime rate goes up in big cities during the summer. I guess the theory is that heat drives more people out of their homes and into public places, shortens tempers and generally makes gun owners jumpy. Well, with the dog days of August right around the corner, hopefully our new CRIME issue is arriving just in time to get you killed.

What a difference a year makes. If you pulled a Rip Van Winkle a year ago, then you woke up today in an America with a black President and no investment banks. The Cleveland Cavaliers are unbeatable at home and the world champion Boston Celtics will be lucky to make it out of the first round of the playoffs. The Taliban now controls Pakistan instead of the other way around. Coke-rapper Rick Ross was revealed to be, for all intents and purposes, an ex-cop. Guns & Roses put an album out, Kurt Warner is a HOF shoe-in and Uncle Sam is attempting to engage in direct talks with the brothers Castro.  Gay marriage is legal in Iowa and that “I Love College” guy is rapping better than Eminem. Patrick Swayze has cancer and a critically- acclaimed TV drama… at the same time? Well, in keeping with the universe’s recent trends, prepare to expect the unexpected: here is COOL’EH issue #13.
